Amid profound artistic, social, and political changes, one word resurfaces and establishes itself in the musical landscape of the Third Republic: modality. However, this polysemous concept, with porous boundaries, eludes a simple definition. Sometimes perceived as a legacy of ancient or non-Western music, it becomes a true field of experimentation for composers at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century.
